Work Weekend of October 18-19, 2008

Posted: Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Attendees:  Mike Lobosco, Julian Langer, Ann and John Olschan and daughters Sidney and Natalie,  prospective member Pat Murtagh and guest Ted Piontek, Illona Maruszak, Gordon Sloat, Gary Gash, Jeff Thrasher and guest Ron White, Jim Collard, Gene Daddona and guest Sue Wills, Donna Peters, Diedre Campbell, Mike Copland,  Robert Gottlieb, Sue Byelick and Bill Sherriff.  A Total of 22 participants, a very respectable turnout.  The weather was typical Vermont October with highs of mid 60’s and cool overnights of 30’s with a light frost in the morning, sunny skies and colorful mountains.

Gordon led the painting brigade painting all the bedroom doors on the second floor, second coat along with the door trim.  Jeff and Ron followed hours later and re-installed all the door hardware after paint had dried.  Ann Olschan painted the bilco door second coat as soon as the sun came around to that side of the house.  She also touched up all the bedrooms and hallways that had been scuffed up this past year, ‘Wet Paint’ signs hung everywhere.  Jim Collard painted the front balcony that had just been re-built in the earlier September work weekend-it looks great and kudos’ to Bob Boothroyd and his team for a great construction project. Here are pics from the 09/08 work weekend.

We still have one more to go OCTOBER 17-19, 2008.

  • We stained the deck and the small outside stairs at each end of the second floor hall.
  • We rebuilt the front balcony.
  • We cut down 17 interior doors to allow airflow underneath and comply with current fire code to prevent back drafts in the event of a fire.
  • We also got the front lights working and diagnosed other electrical issues.

Check out our gallery of photos. (more…)

The Appalachian Trail is much more than a walk in the woods
– Lynn Setzer

Over the years a steadfast group of hikers, sponsored by RHSC, have ventured to the White Mountains in July to hike on the Appalachian Mountain Trail. We travel six hours or so to get there, to hike with approximately 25 lbs and more for seven hours or so each day and sometimes in the rain, and then to bunk with up to 20 other travelers in a room. The White Mountains are always a challenge for one reason or another, whether it be weather conditions, steep trails, heavy packs, etc.

What propels us? … For three days we leave behind hectic lives, cell phones, and other demands to hear other of life’s rhythms, to breathe fresh air, to enjoy comradeship, to rejuvenate. “I walk to fill my heart with wonder, to feed my soul.” (more…)
