River Hills Ski Season is Here! Important December Updates

Posted: Thursday, April 16th, 2020
Dear River Hills,

While Winter is still officially 18 days away, all you need to do is look around to see that the Ski Season is now upon us!   For those of you that made it to the Killington Cup this past weekend, you know the season has begun!…. The World Cup racing was amazing!  The Bands and Fireworks were super! The Skiing really very good (plus a fresh 8” of new snow since Sunday afternoon!) and we had first hand evidence that Molly, our new cook, is going to be a tremendous success!

As to today, we had our December meeting/ Holiday party last night @ Lori and Stu Contstantine’s house, a big THANK YOU to LORI and STU!!

The goal of the Holiday Party/December Meeting is to focus our time together on the social joys of River Hills, and I also know that not everyone can make it in live. Therefore, I am going to use this note to share a few updates with everyone.

This is a longer email, (please read to the bottom) we will cover three key topics that are important:
1. An FYI on a job well done with Coordinator training and our first Virtual RHSC member meeting!
2. Reminders for a successful season.
3. Very Important Policy change with regard to Guest Confirmation and Cancelation Policy.

1. FYI – We had tremendous feedback to our first “Virtual” monthly meeting…  We had a huge turnout for our November meeting and covered a ton of information! THANK YOU to Sheila Evers for leading the Coordinator training session and to all of you that ask such great questions!  We have officially registered more than 50 members that have completed the annual coordinator training! For those that missed it, please reply to this message and Brendan will forward the training link.  The virtual format will be an option for upcoming meetings, especially in those months where, historically, we have had low turnout at the Long Ridge Tavern. We know it is tough at times to travel to Stamford to join us in person and this will provide a strong vehicle to continue interaction within the club and share key information. We will communicate clearly and in plenty of time the venue for each meeting.  Thank you again to those who joined and keep the feedback coming!

1. Seasonal Reminder! –  As we head into our busiest time, we want to highlight a couple of housekeeping items.
*This is a lot of fun and we are very fortunate to have such an awesome club!   Please take the time to interact with everyone at the club, we have a lot of very interesting and fun members that would enjoy getting to know you better!  Also, do introduce yourselves to our guests, let’s help them see why this is such a great place to join!  Remember, we are always looking for new members and you are our best marketeers!
*Make sure you check the board when you arrive at the lodge and know what your job/jobs are for the weekend. The reason the club runs so well is that our members all chip in. It isn’t the responsibility of the weekend coordinator to track you down…  also, if you see something beyond your assigned duty, please jump in! it makes it better for all of us!
*There is No Smoking/Vaping inside the lodge, this includes the bedrooms.
*While we focus on making it comfortable for all, we do have a long standing club rule that you should wear a robe or appropriate PJs when wondering the halls. While I am sure you look awesome in your boxers, not everyone wants to see it.
*Illness Guidelines for Lodge Visits- Please be considerate of other Club members staying at the Lodge, we love you, but, not that much:
***If you have had a contagious illness such as influenza or gastroenteritis (vomiting and diarrhea), please do not visit the Lodge until you have been free of fever, vomiting and diarrhea for 24 hours.
***While at the Lodge, please practice good hand washing and wipe down the sink and surrounding areas with disinfectant wipes (available in all bathrooms at the Lodge).
*If you have guests, it is your responsibility to help them with duties and rules.
*Be courteous, when you get 40 people in one lodge, there will be different schedules… please just be aware of your noise levels.

1. New Guest Confirmation and Cancelation Policy!  –  One of the big items that we have heard is a desire from our membership to be able to share the club with your friends. The challenge historically has been that our policy (only confirming guests 10 days prior to reservation) as a result of that short window for guests to plan their schedules, many times they had made other arrangements. Therefore, we are now going to confirm guest reservations 3 weeks prior to the reservation. The implication for our members is that you will need to make reservations and make them early…. You are still our first priority and as always, you will be confirmed upon reservation!  Our Cancelation policies remain very lenient for all members and guests, although you should note that we have implemented a bit more notice for guests, this is in conjunction with the increased confirmation time.  Please read the slide below, it highlights the changes… the Manual is being updated as I type.

That’s all for now, keep an eye out for more communication, let us know your comments and Make your reservations now!  It is going to be an awesome season!

RHSC – Get Ready for Winter

Posted: Thursday, April 9th, 2020
River Hills,

Winter is definitely here….   Killington is open and the cold weather is rolling in!

Two key things….  First, to the 50+ River Hills members that joined the November meeting, Thank You for making our first “Virtual” meeting a great success. Sheila (a new board member this year) and Stephanie did an excellent job with the Coordinator training, we covered a ton of critical information in a very quick time and the team has created a model that highlights our objective of making the club more accessible to all. The session was recorded, presentation will be posted and many of you are now trained for the season!  If you missed the session and would like to access the training off-line, please reply to this email and we will send you the link.

In conjunction with the Coordinator training, I would like to make a special call out to two of our other new Board members…  Jenn Freeda for the fabulous job in driving our member renewal process, I think you will agree, the new on-line sign-up was both quick and simple, what you likely don’t see is how that work has created a framework for an up to date system behind the scenes. That framework includes being the foundation for our new Coordinator report. This brings us to Alex Breslin-Johnson, Alex has done an amazing job helping us transform the Coordinator report… Not only is it simpler to use for our weekend coordinators, it will also more accurately capture and track the lodge usage and revenue. This is a critical step in insuring our club’s long term viability and success… Please join me in Thanking both Jenn and Alex!

Second item, The FIS Women’s World Cup is coming to Killington for the weekend after Thanksgiving. This is always a great event and awesome weekend. River Hills will use the World Cup weekend as an opportunity to warm up the Lodge for another great season. Thanks to John Ridgeway (another new board member), and his loyal band of RH Helpers, we have completed 3 successful work weekends and the lodge into excellent shape!  We are also excited to his will introduce our new cook, Molly Grace. She will be making us dinner on Saturday night of World Cup, as we are still in off-season, we will be charging a $10 surcharge for the weekend. Please join us in welcoming Molly, enjoy a fabulous meal and exciting event!  We currently have 25 folks signed up for the weekend, we would love to fill the house, make sure to get your reservation in!

As encouragement to all, in addition to great early season skiing, Killington will be having Fireworks, Great Music and the Best Women Skiers in the world.  Click here for Spectator Information and/or check out Killington’s website.

See you at Killington… Think Snow and lots of Cold Weather!

Latest River Hills COVID-19 response

Posted: Tuesday, March 24th, 2020

Dear River Hills,  Who would have imagined how quickly our world could change?  Just over a week ago I was skiing and now we are all in virtual lockdown!  I trust that all of you are coping well with these continued and escalating Corona associated trends. These are definitely challenging times, please do take care of yourselves and stay safe/sane!   If you haven’t seen the latest from Killington, the Resort operations are suspended until further notice. In response, River Hills will be extending the cancelation of existing reservations through the weekend of April 11, we will continue to assess the situation and will make decisions, on possible extension, based on the best information available.   That said, we have other important work that needs to be done.

  • Return remaining Bulk tickets.
  • CSC has been in touch with the ski resorts and has requested an increase in the allowable percentage of tickets we return for credit. Some resorts seem ready to allow full credit for all returns, a few are still deciding.  As you know, there is never a guarantee, so keep your fingers crossed and CSC will notify us of the final outcome.
  • In the meantime, please gather your tickets and forward to Susan Brown by April 25th @ 170 Pemburn Dr, Fairfield CT 06824
  • If you have tickets in your bin at the lodge, please reply directly and let us know. We will be taking one trip up to the lodge to complete the closing procedures for possibility that this extends through the end of spring.  We would likely do this in the next week, so contact us ASAP if you need us to gather material from your bin.
  • Attend our Virtual member meeting April 7th at 7:30.
  • We will be having our next RHSC membership meeting in 2 weeks. The nominating committee will be sharing their recommended executive board slate at this meeting, you will also have the opportunity to nominate from the floor.  If you have thoughts on the executive leadership (Pres, VP, Treasurer, Secty), please reach out directly to the nominating committee (Sam GenMarli PinochetGreg Gibson and Aileen Cahill).
  • This next meeting will be by WebEx (same as our previous virtual sessions), we will be fully leveraging technology to apply the appropriate Social Distancing.  Please feel free to bring your own cocktails and appetizers!

As I shared in the last email, we will continue to monitor and will strive to overcommunicate in the case that further action is required.

If you have any question, please feel free to call me directly, (914) 805-9066.
